Whatever their geographical or political point of view, Sea and coastal strategies highlight an “abyssal need” for knowledge and frequently call for a reinforcement and a better valorization of research in Marine Sciences and Technologies (MST). But, when a French public research resources inventory is needed, in the perspective of constructing a consistent action plan, we lack a framework to define thematic and disciplinary perimeter to be taken into account, to identify available data, to choose practical evaluation or estimation methods. The following study is a proposal to answer these questions. The methodology is mainly based on data collected by French High Council for Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (Hcéres) and completed by an inquiry.... |

The Atankwidi Catchment, which lies in the White Volta Basin in West Africa, is intensively cultivated by locals for economic gains. During dry seasons, farmers irrigate their crops, chiefly tomatoes, using shallow groundwater harvested from shallow ponds they dig using simple tools like an axe, hoe, bucket and bowls. Recent expansion in cultivated areas has brought to the fore the need to estimate the volume of shallow groundwater stored in the catchment’s underlying aquifer and to what extent it can sustain the incremental growth in irrigated areas. |

ABSTRACT This study presents a spatial analysis of species richness of soft-bottom bony and cartilaginous fish species in the Colombian Caribbean. The dataset consisted of 625 species distributed among 15651 georeferenced occurrences. The global richness completeness analysis suggests that the list is close to completion but that probably more species await being registered at greater depths. In spatial terms, our knowledge of fish richness remains incomplete as none of the spatial units, in which the general area was divided reached 100 % completeness and few reached 70 % or higher completeness probably due to the incidence of numerous rare species. The Guajira, Palomino, Tayrona and Golfo de Salamanca zones, displayed the highest observed and predicted... |

ABSTRACT The profitability of a rabbit farming system must consider the rabbit’s breed, nutrition, management, sanitation and mainly the thermal environment that the animal will be exposed during the productive period. The aim of this study was to compare the internal thermal environment of two rabbit houses, one with ridge vent and the other without ridge vent. Geostatistical technique was used to evaluate the spatial variability of enthalpy. Data were collected at 48 points in each house during eight days at the end of summer season 2016. Measurements of dry-bulb temperature, relative humidity and wind speed were made for 1 min at three times a day at 7:00 a.m., 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. In addition, the enthalpy was calculated and a data analysis was... |

The consequences of a sudden decrease in water salinity on a macrophyte community dominated by the marine species Zostera noltii were investigated in a shallow coastal lagoon (Southern France). The expected change in the community assemblage was a competitive displacement of Z. noltii by Potamogeton pectinatus and Ruppia cirrhosa. However, the results of an eight-year survey did not validate this hypothesis. Zostera noltii remained dominant after three years at low salinity (ca. 5) and then suddenly disappeared within one year. The decline of Z. noltii was not associated with an increase of other species. The maximum depth colonized by all species decreased, suggesting that light availability became a limiting factor for the aquatic vegetation. The high... |

Deep-sea ecosystems have attracted considerable commercial interest in recent years because of their potential to sustain a diverse range of mankind's industrial needs. If these systems are to be preserved or exploited in a sustainable manner, mapping habitats and species distributions is critical. As biodiversity at cold-seeps or other deep-sea ecosystems is driven by habitat heterogeneity, imagery is the obvious choice for characterizing these systems and has indeed proven extremely valuable towards mapping biogenic habitats formed by dense aggregations of large sized species, such as coral reefs, tubeworm bushes or bivalve beds. However, the acquisition of detailed images with resolution sufficient for reliable identification is extremely time... |

Local, regional, and global policies to manage protect and restore our oceans and coasts call for the inclusion of ecosystem services (ES) in policy-relevant research. Marine and coastal ES and the associated benefits to humans are usually assessed, quantified, and mapped at the ecosystem level to inform policy and decision-making. Yet those benefits may reach humans beyond the provisioning ecosystem, at the regional or even global level. Current efforts to map ES generated by a single ecosystem rarely consider the distribution of benefits beyond the ecosystem itself, especially at the regional or global level. In this article, we elaborate on the concept of "extra-local" ES to refer to those ES generating benefits that are enjoyed far from the providing... |

The purpose of this study was to investigate the present situation of compost spreading with manure spreaders in Tokachi region. Therefore, three different types of manure spreaders: rear horizontal beater type(A),vertical beater type (B) and side discharge type (C),were used to determine the application pattern and accuracy of compost spreading.
